This Day In Gaming - August 28: Guild Wars 2

game
Guild Wars 2
On August 28, 2012, ArenaNet and publisher NCSoft opened the gates of Tyria to the world with the launch of Guild Wars 2, one of the most anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing games of its era. Players who had pre-purchased the game were already exploring from August 25, but the 28th was the official global launch, and it arrived carrying the weight of enormous expectation. The original Guild Wars had been a cult favourite since 2005, and its sequel promised to tear up the MMORPG rulebook rather than simply refine it.
A long road to Tyria
The seeds of Guild Wars 2 were planted back in 2007. ArenaNet had been designing a large expansion for the original game, provisionally titled Guild Wars Utopia, when the team realised its most ambitious ideas simply could not fit within the constraints of the existing engine and systems. Rather than compromise, the studio scrapped the expansion and poured its energy into a full sequel. The game was formally announced on March 27, 2007, though players would wait more than five years to actually step into it.
That patience was deliberate. ArenaNet cancelled planned beta tests in 2008 to avoid showing the game before it was ready, and instead ran closed alpha and beta sessions through 2011. The studio wanted the launch to make a statement, and by the time August 2012 arrived, the hype had reached a fever pitch.
Rewriting the MMO playbook
What set Guild Wars 2 apart was its willingness to challenge conventions that most of its rivals treated as sacred. The biggest of these was the business model. Like the original game, Guild Wars 2 charged no monthly subscription. Players bought the game once and owned it, a buy-to-play approach that stood in sharp contrast to the subscription-heavy market dominated by titles like World of Warcraft. The game later went free-to-play in August 2015, opening its world to an even wider audience.
The design ideas were just as bold. Guild Wars 2 replaced the traditional quest-hub grind with dynamic events, world happenings that unfolded whether or not a player was present and that rippled outward in consequence. A defended village might fall if no one intervened, changing the surrounding area until players pushed back. Combat encouraged synergy between professions, rewarded the use of environmental weapons, and stripped away some of the fiddly complexity of the first game. There was a responsive personal storyline that reacted to player choices, and a sprawling World versus World mode that pitted entire servers against one another in persistent, days-long battles.
Universal acclaim
Critics responded with near-unanimous praise. Guild Wars 2 landed a Metacritic score of 90 out of 100, drawing standout reviews across the board. PC Gamer awarded it 94 percent, IGN and GameSpot both handed out 9 out of 10, and Time magazine went further still, naming it the best video game of 2012 and crediting it with capturing "the feel of a living world." That last phrase summed up what so many reviewers responded to: a game world that felt alive and reactive rather than static and scripted.
Sales and legacy
Commercially, the launch was a triumph. Guild Wars 2 sold two million copies within its first two weeks, and by the time it went free-to-play in August 2015 it had passed five million copies sold. By August 2013 it was drawing around 460,000 concurrent players, and by August 2021 more than sixteen million accounts had been created. It went on to earn a nomination for Role-Playing and Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards.
More than a decade later, the game is still running, still receiving updates, and still celebrating anniversaries with its community. Its influence spread well beyond its own player base, as its dynamic-event philosophy and subscription-free model nudged the wider genre toward more flexible, player-friendly designs. And the story is far from over. At Summer Game Fest 2026, ArenaNet unveiled Guild Wars 3, described as a modern evolution of the MMORPG for PC and PlayStation 5, ensuring that the world first opened on this day in 2012 will continue for a new generation.
For an MMO that set out to break the rules, Guild Wars 2 broke them beautifully, and August 28 remains a landmark date for anyone who watched the genre grow up.
Also on this day
August 28 is best known in gaming for Guild Wars 2, but it is worth a nod that the date sits in one of the busiest release windows of the year, as studios line up their big titles ahead of the autumn rush.
