Overview
Investigate, trespass, eavesdrop, and platform through a would-be murder mystery as a lovable old grandpa who made a deal with Death for all the right reasons.
Description
The Final Days of Olin Earl is a non-linear detective platformer in a tiny open world. It creates elaborate emergent puzzles by mixing a few simple ingredients.
Investigation: Sleuth out the whereabouts of your grandson by looking for clues. Discuss the right clue with the right person at the right time to solve the mystery.
Information Puzzles: Sometimes the solution has been right in front of your nose the whole time, you just didn't know you were looking for it yet. ("Metroid-Brania")
Platforming: After becoming supernaturally revitalized, Olin can explore the world with surprising finesse. Jump and then open your umbrella to glide through the air. The geometry of the world is part of the puzzle.
Pockets: Important clues and other small items that fit in your pockets can be stashed for later. Things that are too large to fit in your pockets must be carried by hand. Very realistic!
Friend of Death: Summon Death Himself to chat or become a ghost. Ghosts can pass through locked doors, but they cannot act upon the world of the living.
Time and Weather: Use a park bench to advance the time to the next night or day. See what the villagers do differently when the weather is clear or rainy, and where they go at night.
Collect Lost Souls: The final outcome at the end of the game could be effected by how thorough your investigation is, and whether or not you uphold your end of your deal with Death Himself.
No Combat: There is no combat, no health bar, no player stats, no mini-map, no hand-holding, no quest log, and dying is something you will frequently do on purpose to progress.
Play as Olin Earl, a friendly old grandfather who lies patiently upon his deathbed. Enter Death Himself, with his lantern upon his staff. Olin's time is coming soon, Death assures him. But in the meantime, there are still other souls due to meet their makers even sooner. While Death is listing off names from his Book of the Dead, he mentions a name that sends a chill down the old spine of Olin. The name is Alan Earl, Olin's grandson. Irate and confused, Olin pulls himself up from the imprint in his mattress, declaring that he must venture across the street to his grandson's house to warn him. But when he gets there, he finds Alan's studio to be in shambles, a puddle of blood on the floor. Death tries to convince Olin to go back to bed, but Olin is determined to change fate. And so Death offers him a deal.
The deal that Death offers to Olin is simple: Death will grant Olin the vitality of his youth. But he will also grant him the ability to see the hidden Lost Souls that litter the world of the living. Olin must use his regained vitality not only to save his grandson, but also to collect these Lost Souls on Death's behalf. If Olin isn't able to repay his debt, he could become a Lost Soul himself.
The Final Days of Olin Earl proudly features reproductions of public domain historical works of fine art and music, including remastered music recordings by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and others, as well as paintings by Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, and others. There is absolutely no AI generated content in the game.
