Description
Explore a fully procedural universe filled with over two million real star systems, all at 1:1 scale. Build your own rockets, fly them with real orbital mechanics and aerodynamics, and land anywhere from the Moon to planets around other stars, in one seamless flight from the launch pad. Along the way, you can build space stations in orbit, set up colonies and factories on the worlds you land on, and keep pushing further out. Everything is simulated, from the orbits of the planets to the air flowing over your rocket.
With the right technology, your program can leave the solar system behind and head into the stars. All of them are real, mapped by space telescopes and placed at their true distances. Visit known exoplanets like Proxima Centauri b, which orbits in its star's habitable zone, and the seven Earth-sized planets of TRAPPIST-1. Or venture further to stars thousands of light-years away. Around every star, the whole system is procedurally generated from what's known, with everything from lava worlds and frozen moons to ocean planets, ringed gas giants and asteroid belts.
Closer to home, the planets and moons of our solar system are modelled at their true size and distance. Walk where the Apollo astronauts took their first steps, fly down into the canyons of Valles Marineris on Mars, explore the cracked ice of Europa with Jupiter hanging overhead, or stand under Titan's orange sky on the shore of a methane lake.
Design your craft from over 250 parts, including engines, fuel tanks, wings, landing legs, wheels and docking ports. You can build anything from a small suborbital rocket to heavy lifters, landers, space stations, rovers and spaceplanes. Every part has its own mass and function, and with realistic aerodynamics, the way you put a craft together changes how it flies. When it's ready, stage it, fuel it, add your crew and roll it out to one of three launch sites: Cotopaxi in Ecuador, Hilo in Hawaii or Kaikōura in New Zealand.
Orbital mechanics apply to every flight, from launch to landing. Plan your transfers with maneuver nodes on the map, wait for the right transfer window and time your burns. Rendezvous and dock with other craft, aerobrake to save fuel and survive the heat of re-entry on your way down to the surface.
Any place you land can become a colony, and you build it by hand in first person. Set up drills to mine resources, put up habitats for your crew, run power to each module and fit out the rooms inside, from greenhouses that grow food to factories that turn raw materials into fuel and new parts. As your colonies grow, build launch pads so missions can start from other worlds instead of Earth, and set up hauling routes to keep everything supplied as your program spreads across the solar system and out to other stars.
Take on contracts to fund your program, manage your crew, and earn research by exploring new worlds. You start out with the kind of chemical rockets flying today, then unlock near-future technology based on real designs: nuclear thermal rockets, ion and plasma engines, nuclear reactors and, eventually, fusion drives for the long trip to other stars.
Project Longshot supports mods, so the community can add their own creations to the game.
