A Learning Path Designed for Complete Beginners

Even if you have never studied Japanese before, you can begin with hiragana and katakana.

The game guides you through kana explanations, stroke order, recognition, romaji input, and more, using milestone assessments to confirm what you have learned. Begin with the kana, then progress through N5, N4, N3, N2, and N1—turning the Japanese you truly learn into your character’s strength.

If you already have experience with Japanese, you can choose the level that best matches your current ability.

The learning content covers Japanese kana as well as vocabulary and grammar from JLPT N5 through N1.

Vocabulary entries do more than display an isolated definition. Study cards include the Japanese spelling, kana reading, part of speech, definition, example sentences, sentence readings, and easily confused alternatives. Many entries also include additional examples, sentence breakdowns, usage contexts, and memorization tips.

Grammar lessons explain how each structure is formed, what it means, when it is normally used, and how it differs from similar expressions. Example sentences do more than provide translations: they also explain why particular particles, word forms, and sentence structures are used.

A Carefully Designed Learning System

The learning process in Lexicon Odyssey is divided into comprehension, active recall, error correction, and spaced review.

When you first encounter new material, the game presents its reading, meaning, examples, and explanation. The answer is then hidden so that you must actively recall it. As your proficiency increases, the available question types gradually expand from basic definitions to:

- Recalling Japanese from its meaning

- Identifying the meaning of Japanese words

- Distinguishing kanji readings

- Completing example sentences

- Kana and romaji input

- Kana listening exercises

- Mixed vocabulary and grammar assessments

Incorrect material enters the error-correction process, and its review interval is adjusted until you can recall it correctly again—and eventually demonstrate that you have truly learned it.

The game uses a spaced-review system to schedule previously studied material. Repeating the same question several times in a single day will not be mistaken for long-term mastery.

Only knowledge that can still be recalled after time has passed is considered securely learned.

A range of settings is also available during study expeditions, allowing you to reduce or disable distracting battle visuals and sound effects.

Invite Your Friends for a Japanese Showdown!

Up to 8 knights can gather in the camp's Friend Hall. Invite Steam friends to chat, form teams, and face each other in friends-only PvP!

Choose a question type for your attack and answer correctly to strike your opponent. Hitting a weakness deals more damage, and your equipment and magic play a part too. PvP is limited to friends and is not focused on competitive balance.

How Much of What You Learned Has Stayed With You?

Open Memory to see which words have stuck, which still need work, and what is coming up for review. Readings, meanings, and usage are tracked separately: recognizing a translation is only part of knowing a word. Adjust the review schedule for familiar material, or bring something back when you want to strengthen it. Give every review a purpose!

Try the 30-second Word Sprint! Answer questions drawn from material you have already studied, build a combo, enter Fever, and beat your own record to earn new rank rewards. Keep going, one step at a time!

Run a Burger Shop and Put Your Japanese to Work

Buy the shop key and become the owner of Kotonoha Burger, earning gold between expeditions. Customers place their orders in Japanese: which patty, which toppings, what size drink, and eat in or take away. Listen carefully to get every detail right.

Jot down notes as you listen, then choose ingredients page by page from memory to make the burger. Mistakes cost you money! Each page also ends with a quick-answer question. Answer them all quickly and correctly to create a Masterpiece Burger and earn extra income. Keep practicing until you can take and complete an entire order without your notes.

Learning Does Not Have to Be Boring

Expeditions offer more than numerical progression. The game also features a complete RPG build system:

- More than 360 pieces of equipment, including over a hundred weapons and accessories

- More than 170 collectible spells

- Distinctive effects for every piece of equipment and every spell

- Dozens of enemies with different traits and combat mechanics

Equipment and spells can be combined around different build concepts, creating distinctive trigger chains and combat loops.

Japanese learning and combat take place at the same time during every expedition. Develop your character, collect equipment, and grow stronger as you learn.

The Japanese you study is no longer something abstract—it becomes real power within the game.

Companions with different personalities and pasts will gradually arrive at your camp.

The game contains more than a thousand NPC dialogue nodes. Your companions do more than distribute rewards: they remember important events from your journey and, as your bond deepens, gradually open up about their pasts and the choices they have made.
