To make matches, swap two tiles to create a row of three or more of the same tile in a horizontal or vertical line. To clear most levels, you must make matches over gold tiles to remove them. Later, you will encounter unpolished tiles that must be matched twice to clear them. Each level has more than one board and most board are wider than the screen, requiring you to scroll to see everything. As you progress, items will hinder you like chains, fog and boxes. You will have assistance from other wizards with things like breaking groups of chains or temporarily clearing fog so you can see what gems are there. After a couple levels, when you match four items together, you create a rainbow gem that can be matched with any two gems that are the same color. When you match five gems, you create a helix that can clear an entire horizontal row.

There is the chain style where you click and drag your mouse along a line of three or more of the same items, and there is the click on a group of three or more of the same items style. You can swap between styles at any time by selecting it at the bottom. There are fish trapped in green oil bubbles. Below these are blue bubbles with a picture of an item from the board. To release the fish, match the item in the blue bubble. Also on the board are green oil tiles. Make matches over these to clear them. To clear a level, clear all green tiles and free all fish.

War Chess is a basically a chess game with a unusual presentation. All the set pieces for the game are substituted for the character of the High Fantasy setting. Whites are pictured as joined armies of humans and elves, while blacks are mostly represented by the undead forces. The player has an ability to choose from 11 various location for the match to take place. Those include: Forest, Desert, Ice and Lava, Dragon Cave etc. All the environments and pieces are rendered in full 3D with a fully rotatable camera. For the single playing experience the game provides a difficulty slider to account for gamer's proficiency skill. Additionally War Chess offers a multiplayer mode for two players to battle each other as at one PC so as over the network. The game obviously takes it inspiration from the Battlechess series, however doesn't provide unique animations for each type of encounter on the chessboard. Each piece has a double set of animations: one for attacking, another for dying. Those do not differ depending on the type of the opposing piece.
