Before you press start
Saints Row: The Third works well without any homework and shows the series at full volume. For the whole story, start at the first game and play in release order. Agents of Mayhem is a loose spin-off you can skip.
More than the main path
The first two games play the gang story fairly straight, with a loud sense of humour. Saints Row: The Third goes all in on absurdity, and Saints Row IV adds superpowers and an alien invasion. Gat out of Hell then takes the crew somewhere even worse.
