Party RPGs, then Heroes
Jon Van Caneghem's fantasy series began as a party RPG from New World Computing in 1986, then grew a strategy line, Heroes of Might and Magic, that outshone it. Ubisoft has owned it since 2003.
One world. Many eras.
The party RPGs. Van Caneghem's debut, The Secret of the Inner Sanctum, set the pattern: a first-person party crawl through a huge world. The Xeen games closed out the early run.

A legacy worth revisiting
New World Computing made its name with sprawling first-person party RPGs, then launched Heroes in 1995 and found a second hit in turn-based strategy. 3DO's bankruptcy ended that run in 2003. Ubisoft bought the rights and set later games in a new world, Ashan.
