The game plays as your average vertical-scrolling shooter, in which you must clear several stages by destroying all incoming enemies and surviving their onslaught. A unique addition to Karous, is that you don't collect weapons by power-ups, but instead upgrade each of your basic weapons (gun, sword and shield) depending on their use thanks to a basic experience module, with increased power and features at later levels (multiple shots, bullet reflection, etc.) The game uses cel-shaded polygonal graphics with a distinct black and white look.

The game faced multiple issues during development, which resulted in rushing the product despite existing bugs. Both versions were heavily criticized for long loading times, poor camera system, gameplay glitches, complicated plot and sloppy character control. The game faced development issues which resulted the product being rushed and ultimately a poor product being delivered. Planetarium Creator Ohira Takayuki Kanshuu Homestar Portable is a PlayStation Portable adaption of Sega Toys' popular Homestar series of consumer planetariums. The Homestar systems are portable planetarium projectors made by SEGA, intended for domestic use, and retail for around 20-25'000yen. The main restriction with gadgets like that will always be how brightly they can project over an average size room. Homestar Portable for the PlayStation Portable doesn't have this problem. It's not a game, but an astronomy tool for the PSP generation. The view of the heavens depends on the position of the observer on the Earth. This can be set manually, or automatically by the PSP GPS unit (sold separately at almost three times the price of the software). Up/down and left/right on the D-pad control the altitude and azimuth respectively, allowing the player to change the section of sky they are viewing. The shoulder buttons zoom in and out of the star field, and the analog nub can be used to get more information about particular objects. There are numerous options, including changing the threshold for the stars that are visible, adjusting the rate at which time passes and the position of the viewer on the Earth. Some novelties have been thrown in as well, like the night sky on Easter Island the day the Moai statues were discovered, what the sky was like during the last ice age, etc. Novel but not particularly useful - the Easter Island one is basically the sky with some Moai statues on the land.

A branching storyline and time limits force gamers into split-second decisions, but once the "Climax Gauge" is full, time slows down momentarily to let pilots unleash a screen-clearing fusillade of bullets. The game was delisted on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in December 2014. The mobile versions followed suit, being delisted in May 2015. In April 2019, the mobile versions were relisted as free games containing ads as apart of the Sega Forever line, before being delisted once again at an unknown date.

When obtaining a new weapon power-up, it will automatically occupy the inactive slot, or, if both are holstered, replace the less recent weapon of the two. The score is now multiplied by powers of 2. The faster the speed at which enemies are killed, the higher the power, as a meter at the bottom of the screen shows.
